As Good As You've Been To This World: Greenstock at AIGA Philadelphia

Greenstock is AIGA Philadelphia's Spring Lecture series focusing on sustainability and how it relates to a variety of design disciplines. Attendees will gain an emboldened, empowered understanding of how to overcome the barriers to sustainable design.

On March 20, 2008, “National,” the second event of the series, will be a lecture by Marc Alt from the AIGA Center for Sustainable Design and Marc Alt+Partners. Marc Alt speaks frequently to a wide variety of audiences and companies about green design, sustainability and creating value by aligning corporate strategy with environmental and social benefit.

The final culminating event, on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22, 2008 will be a lecture by Dr. Paul Polak. Psychiatrist, entrepreneur and philanthropist Paul Polak is the founder and president of International Development Enterprises (IDE&&341;, a nonprofit that is harnessing the power of the market to alleviate poverty. After a trip to Somalia, Polak became interested in working with the rural poor. He learned about their challenges by employing the same tactics he pioneered as a psychiatrist – interviewing them in their environment to understand their specific struggles firsthand. By becoming intimate with the day-to-day needs of the poor and treating them as customers, entrepreneurs and producers, IDE has developed affordable technologies that have transformed the lives of poor farmers.

The first event “Local,” was held February 20, 2008. A roundtable discussion by members of Philadelphia's community working in green and sustainable design was moderated by Debbie Millman, of Design Matters fame.

All events will be held at the Philadelphia Ethical Society, 1906 South Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, PA, with receptions at 6pm and program beginning at 7pm. Admission is $30 for General Admission, $15 for AIGA Members, $5 for Student AIGA Members, and $10 for Student Non-Members.
