Project assignment
To design a comprehensive BFA catalog for the graduating 2007 UIUC School of Art + Design seniors.

Inspiration, challenges, research
It was difficult to balance working in a team and complete this project outside of class on top of our schoolwork. We were inspired by the the connection in our art foundations education at the University of Illinois and used color and "handmade" as a theme throughout our design. It made sense in the end to choose an uncoated paper based on this concept.

What were you able to do to make this project more environmentally responsible?
We chose New Leaf Everest that is green-e certified, 100% PCF and manufactured with wind energy. We were able to print the booklet locally using soy-based inks. During our final proofing stages we printed 3 spreads per 11"x17" page to check for errors as opposed to just one per page. This saved paper and throughout the project we checked our work via PDF. We had this environmental impact: (saved) 40 fully grown trees, 16,860 gallons, 28 million Btus of energy, 1,865 pounds of solid waste, and 3,684 pouds of greenhouse gases by choosing New Leaf Everest.

How educational was this process for you?
It was good to make a difference environmentally by selecting 100% PCW paper. It's easy to do, you just need to know what's out there.
